Deputy min says Runet to stay free floor for self-expression

MOSCOW, Apr 8 (PRIME) -- The Runet has always been and will remain a free floor for self-expression, Digital Development Minister Alexei Volin said on April 7 at a 25th anniversary of the Russian-speaking Internet segment.

The country’s Internet industry is one of the most advanced in the world and shares common trends of development with the leading countries, Volin said, adding that “nobody knows what will happen in five years, because the speed of changes is very high.”

Leonid Levin, chairman of the information policy committee at the State Duma, the parliament’s lower house, said that new digital technologies will emerge soon.

“Russia is in the avant-garde of the countries passing thorough a soaring digitalization and quickly responds to appearance of new IT solutions,” the deputy said.

“This is why we’re on the verge of moving to a new generation of mobile connection, 5G, an omnipresent introduction into our life of the Internet of Things, a further distribution of the smart city technologies. All these things will need some work and legislation.”

The Network Information Center (NIC), then-known as InterNIC, officially delegated national top-level domain .ru to Russia on April 7, 1994.
